Community Response

Throughout history, HIV/AIDS has affected several communities. People’s different viewpoints, culture, and beliefs disturb how those affected with HIV/AIDS are seen in the community. Those with HIV are not completely to blame for their conditions, rather society’s view of the epidemic affects how they are able to live with the disease and prevent it. It is difficult to search reasons why the epidemic is what it is without overlooking the fact that the country is just not nearly as prepared as they should be to help transgender people. Some communities around the country have made it their responsibility to help transgender women of color. Transgender, Gender-Variant, Intersex (TGI) Justice Project is a San Francisco-based advocacy organization that fights for the rights of transgender, intersex, and gender-variant people who are in prison or have served jail time. The TGI Justice Project works in collaboration with others to forge a culture of resistance and resilience to strengthen us for the fight against human rights abuses, imprisonment, police violence, racism, poverty, and societal pressures. They host events such as “Trans Day of Resilience” to show the transgender community that there is a place for them to feel like home.
